Infinity Scarf Pattern

This infinity scarf pattern is awesome.  I love the stitch and found it here.

I start with 260 chains, then do the same stitch as she shows.  I also do about 15 rows.  It makes a nice fluffy scarf that is a bit longer when you double it up.  This way it isn't right around your neck tight.

What have you been working on this week?  I have a zillion things going on and to make it all just a bit more chaotic, I threw in a visit to a regional craft show on Friday!  Ack! So many great ideas!  They are all rolling around in my head now.

I was at church this morning (as we do most Sundays) and I was talking with our priest.  I told her (yes, she is a girl, we are Episcopal) that I had a prayer shawl for her.  She was so excited.  I can't wait to take it up to her on Tuesday to show her.  This is my Jacob's Ladder Prayer Shawl.  I will donate it to the church and when she is doing her "sick rounds" in the hospital or in our parishioners' homes or at the nursing home and she sees someone who needs one, she can give it to them.

I began working on a few coasters that I will put in my etsy store. Yes, I am resurrecting my etsy store.  We will see how it goes.  A friend of mine also asked if I were interested in setting up at a craft show too this spring/summer.  So they will go towards that if they don't sell in the etsy store. I got the coaster pattern here if you want to try your hand at them.  They are super easy and quick to make.

I also have been sorting some other projects and getting a list of things I need to either complete the project or begin the project.  I spent $40 at JoAnn Fabrics today on fabric remnants for some walker bags that I need to make as well.  I have an order for 8 bags and just haven't gotten around to it.

To top all that off I have begun working on a prayer lap blanket.  It is working up quickly but I think it will take me longer than I have patience for.  This pattern will be posted at a future date.  I am really enjoying creating new patterns.  It has been fun.

1. a video on the Half Double Crochet (a favorite of mine).
2. a video on the foundationless stitches. (This will be such a great resource).
3. finish the prayer lap blanket (can I get it done before Tuesday so I can take it to church with my prayer shawl????)

Cute Granny Round Dish Cloth - Free Pattern

I found this cute little dish cloth and I had some cotton that I just got from Michaels on sale for a dollar a skein.  When I saw this pattern I had to make me one. I love this blog for so many reasons but I find that often the patterns are not quite correct.

I have corrected her pattern and am posting it for you.

Granny Round Dish Cloth

Size: 8 ½ inch diameter

Materials: Worsted weight cotton yarn, Size G crochet hook

Row 1: Ch 4. Join with sl st to form ring. Ch 2 (counts as first sc). Make 13 sc in ring. Join with sl st to top of chain 2. (14 sc) 

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as first dc + ch 1). Dc in next sc. Ch 1. (Dc, ch 1) in each sc stitch around. Join with sl st in third chain of beginning stitch.  Turn work.

Row 3: Ch 3. Dc in space below. Ch 1. (2 dc, ch 1) in each ch 1 space around. Join with sl st in top of beginning ch 3. Sl st in next stitch and in the ch 1 space. Turn work.

Row 4:  Ch 3. 2 dc in space below chain. Ch 1. (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch 1 space around. Join with sl st in top of beginning ch 3. Turn work.

Row 5: Ch 3. Dc in next 2 dc. Ch 1. Dc in ch 1 space. *Dc in next 3 dc. Ch 1. Dc in ch 1 space.* Repeat between ** around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. Turn work.

Row 6: Ch 3. Dc in same stitch as joining. Ch 1. Make 2 dc in next ch 1 space. Ch 1. *skip next 2 stitches. 2 dc in next stitch. Ch 1. 2 dc in next space. Ch 1.* Repeat between ** around. Join with sl st in top of beginning ch 3. Sl st in next stitch and in space.  Turn work.

Row 7: Ch 3. 2 dc in space below. Ch 1. *(3 dc, ch 1) in next ch 1 space.* Repeat between ** around. Join with sl st in top of beginning ch 3.  Turn work.

Row 8: Sl st in next stitch. *5 dc in ch 1 space. Skip next dc. Sl stitch in next dc.* Repeat between ** around. Join with a sl st in beginning sl st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

I have to say that when I am starting a new row and are making a chain to become my first DC I never need 3 chains.  2 chains work better for me.  So in the beginning of row 2 I only chain 3.  At the beginning of rows 3, 4, 5,6, and 7, I only chain 2.

Also, the lady's pattern (Miss Abigail's mom) works well for her and makes a flat dishcloth as you can see in her photo.  Mine was flat until I added the last row (row 8).  This shell pattern edging made mine wrinkly or wavy.  I am going to redo the edging on the next dishcloth I make to see if it will lay flat.  I am also going to wash this one and see what happens too.

Jacob's Ladder Prayer Shawl - Free Pattern

Prayer shawls are an awesome gift for someone who has recently been ill, lost a love one, or is struggling with something.  It is like a big hug.  Made a bit larger than a normal shawl, it is half blanket, half shawl.  The idea of a prayer shawl is that the person who made it prayed as they were making it.  They prayed over it, or with each stitch or row.  They thought of the recipient, prayed for them and those prayers and thoughts transcend into the shawl.

I named this shawl "Jacob's Ladder" because I love the story in the Bible.  The story, in short, is about Jacob who is traveling. He dreams one night that he saw a ladder or "stairs" coming down from Heaven.  On these stairs the angels were going up and down. God was at the top of the ladder. The Bible tells us that this dream was a sign of God's promise to us. His promise is to be with us and keep us where ever we should go and bring us back to Him.  I named it "Jacob's Ladder" because I think that this shawl is a symbol of God's promise to us.  The person who receives this shawl will be wrapped in God's promise to be with us and keep us, no matter what-- a perfect meaning for this shawl.

I crocheted this pattern using two similar hues of dark red. The ladders go width-wise.  This is an easy pattern and works up quickly.

The Pattern:

Jacob’s Ladder Prayer Shawl

worsted weight yarn 3 skeins

Size I hook

Start with 275 Foundationless Half Double Crochets.

Row 2: Chain 3, DC in third HDC from bottom row. *Ch 1, Skip one HDC and DC in next*, repeat from * to * to end of row. Ch 2 and turn.

Row 3: HCD in each DC and chain space.  In last chain space make 2 HDC. Chain 3 and turn. (275 HDCs)

Row 4: DC in third HDC from the row below.  *Ch 1, skip one HDC and DC in the next hdc*. repeat from * to * to end of row. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 5: HDC in each DC and chain space.  In last chain space make 2 HDC. Chain 3 and turn.

Change colors.

Row 6: HCD in each HDC. (275 HDCs). Chain 3 and turn.

Repeat rows 2-5 with this color.

Repeat color change 5 more times. Bind off.

Add fringe if you like.

Where Crocheting and Sewing Come Together!

I have been interested in crochet edgings for the past couple months.  I wanted also to start making seasonal kitchen towels.  I love the change of seasons and it makes me happy to have pretty things that change with the seasons too.

I made the edgings one day with some cotton thread I had on hand.  I made up the pattern as I went.  I chained a bunch of chains, then single crocheted in all of the chains.  Then I double crocheted 3 times in one SC then chained 1 (I think), skipped two SCs and did 3DCs in the next SC, chained 1 and skipped 2 SC and did 3DC in the next SC.  I did that all the way to the end.  Then I chained 2 and turned.  I did 3 DCs in each space on the row below,  chaining 1 before moving to the next hole. 

I made the towels myself with some homespun cotton fabric.  Then I sewed the edging on the bottom of the towel with a zig zag stitch.

They are so pretty.  I might not have the courage to use them.

Getting ready for Valentine's Day

We have never really decorated for Valentine's Day but yesterday I found this wreath and we knew we HAD to make it.  This occurred just after my "announcement" that February would be a NO SPEND month on crafty stuff.  It is still January, right???

So off to Michaels we went and we got all the supplies we needed.  My daughter dove right in and began working on the wreath as soon as we got home.  She isn't a rule follower, nor a reader in directions, but thankfully she does a good job making things she sees.

So far here is our wreath.  She is painting the letters as I type and as soon as they dry she will adhere them to our wreath.

Then I found a pattern for this crocheted hearts garland and HAD to make them too.  I crocheted 6 hearts and then attached them to a white chain.  It is super cute.

So I guess we are now decorating for Valentine's Day.  What do you do for Valentine's Day?  Do you decorate for the holiday? Celebrate loved ones? Ignore it all together?

**Three more days til my NO SPEND month begins.  I am getting nervous!!!

Cute Crochet Roses - Free Pattern

It has been sleeting, freezing rain and last night we had some snow.  It is chilly outside.  So to warm things up a bit I searched the internet for some fun flowers to crochet.

I came across this pattern but as I worked it up I realized it was wrong. Here is my corrected pattern.

Crochet Rose

Need:
worsted weight yarn
hook that corresponds with the weight of the yarn
yarn needle

Pattern:

Leaving a 6 inch tail, make a slip knot and chain 52.

In second chain from hook make a single crochet.  Chain 2, skip next chain, SC in next chain. *chain 2, skip next chain, SC in next chain. (basically you are single crocheting in every other chain with a chain 2 in between.) Continue SC, chain 2, skip next chain, SC in next to the end. Chain one and turn.

Row 2: SC in first two chain space.  Then 3 HDC in same space, ch 1 and slip stitch in same chain 2 space. Slip stitch in next chain 2 space, ch 1, 3 HDC, ch 1, slip stitch in same chain 2 space. Slip stitch in next chain 2 space, ch 1, 3 HDC, ch 1, and slip stitch in same chain 2 space. Slip stitch in next chain, ch 1, 4 HDC, ch 1, and slip stitch in same chain 2 space. Slip stitch in next chain 2 space, ch1, 5 HDC, ch 1, and slip stitch in same chain 2 space. Slip stitch in next chain 2 space,  From here to end alternate between 4 HDC and 5 HDC in each chain 2 space.  (in each you will slip stitch to next chain 2 space, ch 1, do 4 or 5 HDCs, ch 1 and slip stitch in same space. then move to the next space with a slip stitch)

When you finish Row 2, bind off with a 10 inch tail.  When you finish Row 2, your flower will look like this, a spiral.

Now, starting with the 3HDC side begin twisting the spiral around so the 3 HDCs are the center of your flower.  Twist the rest around to make the flower. 

Thread your needle with the 10 inch tail and begin sewing the flower together.  You will see the edges on the back and just whip stitch them together making sure you have all the layers attached. Then using the 6 inch tail from the beginning, tie the two ends together.  You may now cut these tails off or use them to attach the rose to another project.

These are so easy to make and super quick.  You can use them for headbands, hat embellishments, or put them on a wreath.  You can add them to all sorts of things.

Cute Crochet Coasters

These are so cute and fun to make.  They whip up in no time flat.  I can make one in about 35-45 minutes time and I am a slow crocheter.

I got the pattern off someone else's blog.  I can't seem to find it again unfortunately.

I am an intuitive crocheter when it comes to making things I look at a bunch of patterns and then put a couple together to make what I am looking to create.

My pattern may not be exact nor might it be exactly what you are looking for.  I will try to explain it as best I can though.

Coaster Pattern:

1 skein of 100% cotton base color (you will be able to make several coasters with just one skein)

1 skein of edging color (100% cotton)

Chain 14.

Single crochet in 2nd loop and each loop after.  (13 SC) ch 2 and turn.

Next row: SC in first SC. *Skip next sc, dc and sc in next sc* to end.  Ch 2 and turn.

Next row: sc in first sc. skip dc, dc and sc in next sc. Ch 2 and turn. You will be doing a dc and sc in every sc in previous row. 

Continue until it looks like a square, about 10 or 11 rows. 

Change colors and sc all the way around the square, with three sc's in each corner. Then slip stitch around the entire thing again to finish it off.

And there you have it.

This exact thing happens to me ALL. THE. TIME!

I love the yarn, I love the pattern, but when I am working on something, I begin to hate it, for me.  If I am making something for someone else I will continue to love it.  But if it is for me. Nope. HATE. IT!

Here are two of the many unfinished projects in my house right now.  I know I have at least three more but can't seem to find them right now. They are packed away somewhere.

This (above) is a pretty pattern, pretty hand dyed yarns that I paid $20 a skein for and bought 5 of them.  I loved the sample in the shop. It is a shawl. It looks so pretty on the mannequin. I am about 40% done and I don't like it anymore. I haven't worked on it in a month. I am thinking I should unravel it out and make a sweater or something for my daughter instead. Hmmmm......

This was going to be another shawl.  More of a wrap that would go over my shoulders on cold days.  Honestly, I end up wearing a sweater and I don't use wraps too much.  It is made with fun chunky yarn in a pretty blue and lime green pattern. I now HATE it. It is sitting on the floor in my closet and will probably sit there a while longer.  It is about half done and I have no intention of finishing it. I am thinking about ripping it out and making an afghan out of it. I will give it away or sell it if I can.

The only things I love and wear are socks.  I love my socks that I knit and I do wear them all the time in the winter. Other than that, I really hate the things I make. Maybe I need to make a sweater for me instead.

So tell me what do you do with your unfinished projects that you no longer love???

Crochet Scrubbie

I have been making these little scrubbies for a while now.  They are wonderful for the shower or bath.  They are similar to a netted scrubbie but work similar to a wash cloth.

I have several posted on etsy and am wondering if I should offer the pattern.  They are simple enough to make and take about 2 hours from start to finish for me while I watch tv.

You can make the inside a different color or make them all one color.  I like when I use a variegated yarn as they end up really pretty.  I use a 100% cotton yarn and they wash and dry in the washer and dryer perfectly.

I sell them for $5.50 on Etsy, here and here and here.  

So tell me what you think.  Would you want the pattern?  What would you be willing to pay for it? $2? $3? $5?

Cute crochet flowers and hearts

First I have to apologize for not posting anything here in almost 6 months. I have still be crafting but I just haven't been posting. I will work on getting some great items up here particularly for Christmas gift giving.

Today I have been making these cute little gems. I just love these little flowers. I got the pattern from a friend of mine on Scrap Sisters Studio message board and I adjusted it just slightly to make a bit fuller petal. These little flowers are about an inch in diameter when crocheted with crochet thread and a size 0 hook.



The pattern is super easy too.

Little Crochet Flower

Chain 5 and connect to first loop with sl st.

Rnd 1: ch 3, 9 dc in loop. (counts as 10 dc)
rnd 2: *ch 2, 4 dc in next dc, ch 2 sl st in next dc* repeat from * to* making 5 petals. Tie off in back.


Now, check out these little heart gems! I {heart} these so much! I found the pattern online and I can't for the life of me find it again. I will edit this post when I find it to give the credit to the right person.



This pattern is super easy too. I memorized it quickly!

Super Cute Crochet Hearts

Chain 4.

3 tc in first loop of chain (all these stitches are in first loop of chain), 3 dc, ch 1, 1 tc, ch 1, 3 dc, 3tc, ch 3 and connect in loop with sl st.

To make a larger heart after you sl st at end do not tie off but continue around again for a second round.

Rnd 2: 4 sc in first ch 3, 2 sc in next 2 tc, sc around in each st to tc at the bottom of the heart. In bottom tc make 2 sc, sc around in each st to second tc. 2 sc in second tc, 2 sc in next tc, 4 sc in final ch 3 space. sl st to first sc and tie off.

See how easy that is???

I am so ready...

for summer. The kids get out of school for the year on Friday and I have so many projects I want to do. BUT I still have school until June 30th. I am not feeling good about being at work and the kids being out of school without me. Not that I think that they will be injured or anything. I am just plain jealous. Okay, there, I said it, I am jealous! I want to be home too and it isn't fair.

I know that the end of the month will come quickly and I will have my measly month off of work. But right now I am stewing in jealousy.

I haven't been very crafty recently. I have sewed on all my daughter's Brownie patches on her vest. I have made two and a half baby blankets in the granny square pattern. They are really cute and they are mindless. I have thought about cleaning off my scrap table, which desperitely needs to be done but not feeling the mojo there at all. I don't think that I have 'moved on' from scrapbooking but I think I just need a bit of a break. It has been almost three months though and I am getting a bit worried.

So help me out my oh, two readers here, how long have you gone without scrapping? Should I be worried?

Hmmmm....if you have found it at your house can you ship it back to me. I am a bit frustrated by the lack of even interest in scrapbooking and that is just not like me. What is worse is that I have two of my children's birthdays coming up and I thought about making invitations but thought against it and decided to BUY! Oh my, my creative strike is worse than I originally thought. However, I might be FORCED to make the invitations just due to lack of funds in our household right now. Maybe if I am forced to do it then the Mojo will be found in the stacks of junk on my scrabook table.

Anyway, I have NOT been without a project and I recently picked up a couple skeins of yarn and am crocheting again. It is nice to have the rhythem and pace of crocheting back. You really move into a trance with it and it is welcoming to my brain. I am currently making two baby blankets. One is green and off white and the other is a blue yarn with pink, purple, yellow, and green specks. Both are make in the granny square pattern and will be a square blanket. I sure hope the recipients like them. A baby is always great for crocheting.

So check back because I might just have to play with some paper soon. Or maybe I will just make the invites on the computer instead......

Here is another flower

This flower pattern that I blogged about yesterday has been bothering me a bit. As I was working the other flowers yesterday I felt that the center was too big and that the flowers were still a bit large for scrapbooking. So today I worked up a few more. I used crochet thread this time, like the stuff you use to make doilies and a #6 hook (1.80mm). I chose off white in color because that was all I had available to play with right then.

Now I know that they are a bit different from the original Lionbrand.com pattern. I made the center of the flower smaller making a chain of 5 instead of 8. I also only did 5 petals instead of 6. These measure 1 1/2 inches in diameter and are a good size for scrapbooking.

They sort of look like little pansies to me and I am anxious to try them in another color. But to do that I need to convince my husband to let me spend some money and I don't think he will go for it right now. I may need to wait a week or so. Laugh.

Trying new things.

I saw this:

on the Lionbrand.com website today and thought it looked really cute and would be fun to put on a scrapbook page. So when I got home from work I tried it.

I tried it two different ways. The first one with Vanna's Yarn a bulky #5 weight and I used an H hook. It ended up being 5 inches in diameter.

That was way too big. I knew when I started it that it would be too big but wanted to go through the motions of the pattern before trying on a smaller yarn. So then the second was using DMC thread (6 ply). I used a B hook and this pattern took most of a whole skein of thread. It ended up being 2 1/2 inches in diameter. A much more manageable size.

New Website!

I actually have a couple websites for you to check out.

First, http://www.peachycheap.com/, is a great site with an ever-changing stock. This site offers scrapbook supplies on the cheap but the clincher is that it only offers one thing a day and when that item is all gone then it is gone. The prices are great and it changes daily. I have been checking it daily for the last two weeks but just can't bring myself to buy anything yet. I am waiting for those must have items. Right now I have a ton of stuff and I need to work through my items in order to justify spending more.

Second, I have found a great scrapbook store that offers a fun monthly kit. It is http://www.awalkdownmemorylane.net/. I won a monthly kit from them in a blog candy from http://www.sheetload.blogspot.com/ and I have used almost everything I received. In further research I have found that they offer two monthly kits each month so you can choose one or the other. This is great because sometimes we don't necessarily like the kit offered by other clubs for the month but are obligated to buy it because of a subscription. This one you can choose. Then they have great add ons that you can choose from also. The kits are reasonably priced at around $30 and they come with a ton of paper and embellies. You can also buy older kits too. I really like some of the older ones and currently have two in my shopping cart waiting the $60 I need to buy them. (donations are welcome!!)

Third, http://www.scarletlime.com/ has updated their site. Their monthly kits look gorgeous too and I just ordered mine for this month and can't wait to get it. I love that they have three kits to choose from with three different price points. You can get the larger kit for about $30 or a project kit for about $20 or a mini kit for between $12-14. I have started with the project kit from an older collection and a mini kit from this month. I love choice. What I also love about this site is that you can look at all the projects that were created with their kits but the beauty of it is that you can use your own materials and make the same project. I made an acordian album with their directions, using my own paper and I love it. I will post some pictures soon.

Fourth, http://www.lionbrand.com/, has a wonderful selection of crocheted amigurami( sp?). They are little animals that are fun to make and fun to give as gifts. They are baby-friendly and easy enough to complete while watching TV in the evening. It takes me about 2 hours to complete one creature. (okay maybe 2 1/2 hours) I have made the frog, pig, and turtle. I am currently working on the penguin. The ones that call for a black button for the eyes, I use a black knot from black yarn instead to make them more baby and toddler-friendly. I will post a picture soon of these little guys. Too cute!
